Stress is a fact of life in today's working environment - each of us is under tremendous pressure from the people we work for (and in many cases the people we work with) to produce results.
CommunicationsOften, we can be in a situation where we feel pressurised into taking on even more work when we already have more work than we feel comfortable with. Management have become very good at making unreasonable demands appear to be very reasonable. There are three rules of communications. Having this knowledge allows you to identify when people are trying to manipulate you, which means you don't get stressed out trying to do too much. The Stroke EconomyAnother source of stress in the workplace is where you do a really good piece of work, but don't get any recognition for it. In this context, the word 'stroke' is a measure of the amount of recognition you give or get. You could get strokes for who you are, or for what you've done. The 'stroke economy' is a way of looking at the quantity and quality of strokes you give and get. Having that knowledge gives you the option of getting high-value strokes from unexpected places, and that feels good! GamesWe've all been in the situation where we have thought, "Why does this keep happening to me?". People play games all the time, but they don't know they are doing it. The bizarre thing about games is, both players end up feeling bad! This means that games are another source of stress. Once you know about game theory, you will know how to avoid the unpleasant outcomes. ScriptsEach of us was born as a prince/princess, but the process of growing up turned us into a frog. Each of us decided on a script very early in life, and it tells us how to be a frog. Frogs get stressed out because they aren't being true to the prince/princess they actually are. Once you work out what your script is, you can avoid the stress of trying to be a frog. Personality TypesThere are six basic personality types, and you can learn how to spot someone's type within seconds of meeting them. This gives you a whole host of information about their preferred style of communication, strokes, games and script. This means that you don't end up being controlled by them. "I had a sixty-a-day habit, and I quit in just one session";
"...it was so easy. In fact 'easy' is the wrong word; I didn't give up cigarettes, they gave me up!"
"I have already recommended the practice to friends..."
"You are so easy to talk to."
"It's rather freaky finding myself eating fruit rather than chocolate; I lost 3 pounds last week."
"Thanks David. Whatever we talked about, it seems to be working - I feel great about myself and have lost 7 pounds! Much appreciation."
"It was like I was stuck in a bad dream; you helped me wake up. For the first time in my life I feel like a valid member of the human race."
"After seeing you about my fear of flying I took my partner for a ride in a hot-air balloon. She got scared, and I ended up comforting her"
The weirdest thing I discovered was that I wasn't angry at all - it felt like anger, but it was something else.
