Weight loss by dieting doesn't work in the long term - we cannot permanently impose our conscious desire to be thin on our subconscious craving for comfort. The only permanent solution is to find the synthesis by negotiation between the conscious and subconscious minds

 

The subconscious is capable of exerting enormous pressure on the conscious mind

  • Do you ache for food, but hate the shape you're in?
  • Are you desperate to lose weight, but can't stop eating?
  • Do you go to the fridge when you're feeling upset?

Maybe your need for food has blown out of all proportion, to the point where food is making you miserable.

Why Is It Difficult To Maintain a Healthy Weight?

I may be consciously aware that it is not healthy to be overweight (if you are concerned about your weight, refer to the height-weight chart). However, if my subconscious is suggesting to me that I can reward myself with food, I may decide to pay attention to that message.

Conscious and Subconscious Minds

The mind can be thought of as having two parts: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the rational part, and the subconscious runs the body.

An example of the subconscious in action is learning to ride a bike. It is simply not possible to learn how to ride a bike by reading a set of instructions. The only way to learn is to get on a bike and keep at it until the subconscious "gets" the coordination between balance and control.

The subconscious is capable of exerting enormous pressure on the conscious mind. This explains why it can be difficult to lose weight.

Weight Loss and the Subconscious

The subconscious is where the messages that we picked up in childhood are stored. For instance, you might have a message in your subconscious such as, "I must eat all the food on my plate".

You can see how this sort of message might cause the subconscious to put pressure on the conscious mind to eat too much.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful technique for changing messages in the subconscious that are no longer working in your best interests.

Once the messages have been reviewed, you will have the choice to eat only because you are hungry, and to stop eating as soon as your body tells you that you have had enough.

Have you ever watched a good film and been surprised how quickly the time has passed? Most people are surprised to learn that they have been in a light trance when watching an enjoyable film; Hollywood calls it "willing suspension of disbelief".

In the same way that when you are watching a movie you are relaxed and comfortable, you will feel very relaxed and comfortable in a hypnotic trance.

Just as you could decide to get up and walk out of the cinema in the middle of a film, you could decide to come out of a hypnotic trance whenever you chose to. You are completely in control.
